Rock Climbing

Where do you rock climb or rappell in the middle of a prairie?
Although information is verified often, it is always a good idea to call ahead.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Rock Climbing: The granite makes Enchanted Rock one of the best rock climbing spots in Texas. Climbers abound on the sheer north face when the weather is good. Although too far from Dallas/Fort Worth to even consider a day hike, Enchanted Rock offers enchanted hiking and rock climbing. Reservations are necessary now and must be made far in advance. Three backcountry camp areas are available more often than campsites. This is a popular and naturally beautiful spot with an enormous dome 1,825 feet above sea level of pink granite that is about one billion years old. The largely bare Enchanted Rock rises abruptly  (see below) and gives terrific views of the surrounding hill country. On summer nights the huge dome creaks and moans as it cools down, causing Comanches to give this rock spiritual properties.
RR 965 Fredericksburg
Texas Park and Recreation fees apply here. May need reservations.
Directions: From Fredericksburg go north on RR 965 about 17.5 miles. Enter park on your left.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park The cliffs of firm conglomerate rock above the lake are the closest rock climbing to DFW. This rocky bluff has eroded into sheer-walled faces with canyons, caves, and cracks. Call before driving for rock climbing only because rangers close area when wet to protect the rock. Lake Mineral Wells State Park is in rolling hills with some rocky bluffs covered with scrubby woods of oaks and cedar elms. In addition to lake activities, you will find rock climbing, hiking & equestrian trails, and state park campgrounds.

"I don't know where you people get your information, or perhaps you just make things up, but Enchanted Rock is NOT 600 feet tall. It is roughly  325 feet.
I have spent over 200 nights there and it is the same size every time.
You guys should be embarrassed. Get your facts straight.

Respectfully,
E-Rock Veteran"

This email made us curious. We discovered:

The Texas Department of Transporatation, Travel and Information Division, 1101 East Anderson Lane, Austin 78752, writes in the Texas State Travel Guide, page 143, that  the dome at Enchanted Rock is 500 feet tall.

Texas Parks and Wildlife, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, 78744, states on their web site that the dome is 425 feet above ground.
