Why do we have a survey?

The survey is a research tool that is compiled, then guides us in: 
1. Planning meeting locations.
2. Seeking land for future ecovillages.
3. Knowing what people seek in their own personal lives and ideal communities.

It also adds you to our mailing list for information regarding ecovillage/Cooperative housing  in the DFW area and invitations to our meetings.

There is an old African saying, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." We have far to go so we will go together and thus take advantage of the social, economic, farming, time, ecological, energy, neighborhood, and child-rearing benefits of an ecovillage. 

Privacy-- provides private living, dining and kitchen facilities within a private home with most home styles providing small private outdoor living areas as well. Houses may be attached as in townhomes or duplexes or may be single family as in garden homes.

Grow Food--Rural cooperative housing and some urban housing will give you an opportunity to grow some or all of your own food, sustainably, of course. Farming is hard work and it can be very lonely when done alone. As any who have been a member of a community garden can tell you, it can also be fun when done together. Add the fact that two heads are usually better than one, and growing food together can also be a good learning situation for all..

Opportunities for Social Interaction--Provides interaction without sacrificing privacy and stops the isolation and loneliness of apartment and/or suburban living. You share skills and talents with other members such as music, cooking or gardening. This also supports social interaction.

Social Support--Provides emotional support and a sense of unity and belonging plus emotional support during stressful times such as illness, family deaths, and childbirth and share best wishes for happy times rather than envy.

Safe Environment--Gated communities are possible in many urban and rural situations. Regardless, all residents know each other well. Strangers are spotted and can be questioned immediately. This degree of safety is only achieved by communities where neighbors and friends know and care for each other.

Healthier Lifestyle--Share exercise with people in your community plus planned exercise areas, activities, and even classes. Meals that are nutritionally balanced, home-cooked, non-processed, and organic without the daily cooking hassle. Better mental health because of social support, shared hobby areas, and planned meditation and quiet areas. 

Shared Resources, Saved time,  and Lower Living Costs--Allows residents access to more facilities than they would have on their own such as community gardens, greenhouse, play areas, workshops, art/craft areas, and shared dining and kitchen facilities in the community areas. Local food and other buying co-ops can be formed with optional membership from residents and even membership among the outlying community if desired. Shared meals, car pooling, shared baby-sitting,  less travel, less yard work, more on-site activities, smaller homes, clustered housing, possibility of owning only one car, trading goods, and shared guest rooms all save living costs. Shared chores and less duplication of effort save an abundance of time.

Children--Cooperative housing  provides others to help with child rearing duties, intergenerational residents, additional role models, playmates within the community, safe places to play within the community. Parents are relieved of some of the time and stress of child raising and actually have more quality time to spend with their children and each other.

Environmentally Friendly--There are more opportunities to reduce, reuse, and recycle when working as a group. Rather than use space for houses, streets, and parking, clustered housing allows cooperative housing  communities/ecovillages to preserve much of the green space of the site. Passive solar housing can be designed. Some (or all) alternative energy sources can be included in the community and within the homes. See energy here.
