Alternating current electricity alternates direction in a repetitive pattern and is created by sources such as power plants or small generators..

The frequency of repetition of this current in the United States is 60 Hertz. This means the direction of the current changes at sixty times per second.

Although solar PVs produce direct current (DC) electricity, we use alternating current in our homes and businesses in North America.

Most appliances and electronic devices in our homes consume alternating current (AC) electricity. It is produced by power plants and generators and delivered to us through wires that are part of a nationally interconnected system known as the utility grid.

DC/AC

Some solar-powered homes have DC circuits also for electronics that use DC electricity.
