Actually it was hard to find any disadvantages of this renewable water system. However, a few people may consider the following to be slight disadvantages of rainwater harvesting:

  1. Slightly more expensive than some other forms of landscape irrigation.

  2. Requires more maintenance than turning on a sprinkler system or hose.
     

  3. If tanks are large, may be aesthetically unappealing to some.

  4. Screening of tanks may cause problems with unreasonable homeowners' associations (see below).

  5. May not meet local building code requirements.

HB 645 passed by the 78th Texas Legislature, 2003, prohibits homeowners' associations from implementing new covenants banning rainwater harvesting installations but grants them the authority to develop and implement rules requiring homeowners to screen their systems appropriately.
