Photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight directly to electricity. They absorb visible light and turn it into an electric current.

The panels work anytime the sun is shining, but more electricity is produced when

1. The sunshine is more intense.

2. When the rays of sunlight are most perpendicular to the PV modules.

PV panels do not use the sun's heat to make electricity. Rather, the electrons freed by the interaction of sunlight with the semiconductor materials are captured in an electric current.

The basic building block of PV technology is the solar "cell." Multiple PV cells are connected to build a PV module which is the smallest PV component sold commercially.

A PV array is created when multiple PV panels or modules are connected.
