There are a couple of places in your home that are "found space," cheaper for you and cheaper for the environment.

The first is loft space or a small second-story room in the peak of your green home.

The space is there, it just needs to have a way up. No need to take up the space of a regular staircase--try a ladder, spiral staircase, or a ship's ladder that Thomas Jefferson is given credit for creating.

This space can be a loft, the guest bedroom, the kids' play area, a home office, or just plain storage.

The second is a screened porch rather than a covered patio. So much of a Dallas-Fort Worth year is mild that this porch can be used most of the year.

Have it on the south side of your home as the wind usually blows from the south or southeast in the summer. Your home will shield it from the north wind in winter but it will be open to the warming rays of the sun in winter.

Add a ceiling fan or two, plus comfortable, water-resistant furniture and you have a room you can use most of the year--mosquito free--as a family room, a safe play area for children, or a special sleep-over spot for older kids.
