What is a door? It is a place where people enter and leave your home as well as a place to bring possessions in or out of your home. Unfortunately, it is also a small hole in your home which has the potential to leak conditioned air out of your home and hot or cold outside air into your home. Those leaks should be remedied. Doors need to be inspected annually of biannually for leaks. They also need to be caulked and weather stripped at least every five years and inspected annually of biannually for leaks. There are reasons to replace doors but replacing a door just for its energy-efficiency benefit would be near the bottom of the remodeling list. Why? The door's surface area is quite small and its replacement cost is high. However, when you do need to replace an exterior door, it pays to consider its thermal features when making a choice..
