Before we can understand what the walls are not doing correctly in our homes, we need to understand what they include and their proper functions. A building enclosure includes the roof, walls, openings, foundation, and below ground materials that separate the building from its surrounding environment. It adds a thermal barrier, a vapor barrier, drainage planes, and an air barrier. Walls function to control, support, distribute utilities and other services, and beautify (or "uglify") our homes.
