When winter cold settles in, many of us feel cooler, or just plain cold, near the windows in our homes. We might even start thinking it would be wise to replace those drafty windows with new ones. Yet most windows and doors in North Texas homes don't need replacing. Here is what normally happens to you near a cold window whether it is new or old. You feel your own body heat radiating from your body to a cold, uncovered window. The radiation makes you feel chilled. If you cover that window, with drapes for example, you will be comfortable in a reasonably warm room. Heat moves from warmer to cooler. In the winter, the heat from the human body radiates to the uncovered, cold window, making us feel cold. Your body heat can only radiate to a cold window if it is in your "sight line." If your body can't "see" the window, you will not feel cold Just as the fan in another room can not cool you, your body can not radiate heat to a cold window in another room. A drape or other cover on your windows will stop the radiation for much less cost than replacing a window. There is one other major reason for winter chills, though. The windows probably do need caulking as that will stop air leaks. Contact Terry Jensen at 972 251-1532 or 817 545-0140.
