Green Building Glossary

In the past, most of us read too many articles about homes in the north, usually without realizing that home remodeling should be climate specific. Consequently, many Texans rush out to replace their doors and windows when they feel the first frost of winter or the first 90-degree day of spring or summer.

The vast majority of windows and doors in a North Texas home don't need replacing.

Most of the preventable heat loss or gain from windows is from air leakage. This can be stopped by weather stripping and/or caulking without replacing the windows.

If this is done correctly, it will make most old windows or doors 90% as air tight as a brand new one for a fraction of the cost.

Every home owner should try this before replacing doors and windows or other energy renovations:

Admittedly there is a lot of pressure from industry to replace windows. If you do replace your windows, be aware that they is a very long payback period.
