Green Building Glossary

There is a type of low-E window that keeps heat out of homes in North Texas. These windows are good for unprotected windows, which actually receive the direct rays of the sun during the spring, summer, or fall. If the sun does not actually hit the window during the warm months, though, be advised that a low-E window is a waste of money.

There is another type of low-E windows that keeps heat in a home during the winter. That same window keeps heat in that home during the summer.

This is counter-productive. Living in the  Dallas-Fort Worth area means you do not need more heat in the home during most of the year. The sun does that for you here--spring, summer, and fall.

How does a low-E window work?

They have microscopically thin layers of metallic oxide bonded to the surface of a window's glass.  Only 38 percent of the solar energy is visible. The other rays are invisible, infrared rays that pass through glass windows, adding heat to your home.

A low-e coating works like an invisible mirror to reflect selected portions of the light spectrum back out or back in through windows.

Summary

Choose the correct Low-E window for this climate.

Don't waste your money buying a low-E window for one that sun does not hit.
