First, assess the situation. If mold is larger than 10 sq. ft., it is advisable to consult a certified professional. 

Small Amounts of Mold

Clean and dry hard surfaces such as showers, tubs, and kitchen countertops. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Use a detergent or use a cleaner that kills germs. 

Replace any drywall or wood that shows signs of mold.

Absorbent materials (such as carpeting or sheetrock) that are moldy probably need to be replaced. If something is moldy, and can't be cleaned and dried, throw it away..

Examine carpets, tack strips, and molding, too, for past or present signs of moisture. Replace carpet when possible with smooth surfaces that do not easily shelter mold spores.

Wear a Respirator

Wear an “N-95 respirator,” mask over your mouth and nose, so that you do not breathe in a lot of mold. A respirator that protects against mold is called an N-95 respirator and can be purchased at a hardware store.

Use the N-95 Respirato, not a:

• Dust Mask

• Handerchief

• Bandana

They will not protect you because mold can pass through it. 

Also Wear two sets of latex gloves and tyvek suit if area is large enough to warrant such action

Seal off area with plastic to contain area and prevent mold spore dispersal. Spray adhesives and duct tape work as great combinations to prevent containment from falling.

Place air scrubber inside containment to filter air as you work to prevent broad contamination. While normal equipment that would be used in extensive contamination would easily pass thousands of dollars, a smaller air scrubber from Home Depot or Lowes will work relatively well. 

Again, mold is dangerous. All but the very smallest amount of mold should be removed by a professional. 

Appraise the situation well before you act and follow all safety recommendations. Err on the side of safety, not money.
