Green Building Glossary

Today’s homes are more airtight, thereby trapping more pollutants, like mold spores, inside.

In choosing materials for your home remodel, be aware that  mold resistant does not mean that mold cannot grow. These products limit the conditions which are prime for organism growth, reducing the chances for mold. Under the right conditions, mold can grow on almost any surface.

In fact, molds and mildew can be found in almost any situation. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, insulation, and even soap scum--virtually any organic substance. Mold only needs two items to grow: Moisture and oxygen.

Summary:

If mold is a problem in your home, you must clean up the mold and eliminate leaks and other sources of moisture to stop the growth of mold in the future..

If there is a large amount of mold, or if it is black mold, hire professionals to clean up the mold.
