All recreational drugs (from alcohol and nicotine to
heroin and cocaine) work on the brain's pleasure center by eliciting
a dopamine response.
Whenever you have a very pleasant experience (milk chocolate or your first kiss), the brain releases dopamine, a pleasure-producing chemical. This, in turn, helps to build a pleasure center in your brain; you remember that kissing and chocolate are good and want (in some instances, crave) that pleasure again. You are hooked! Some objects the brain remembers as pleasant are actually good for you, some are not good for you, and some are downright unhealthy. Your brain's pleasure center does not know the difference. |
